Rough gems as building materials
« on: May 09, 2008, 09:39:00 pm »

It'd be neat if we could use rough gems as building materials, e.g. if I wanted to construct my trade depot out of rough onyxes. Probably not a good idea to make them auto-usable by workshops; perhaps put discovered rough gems under the economic stones list?

I don't think 3 small gemstones can make a depot, it would have to be multiplied by 3 to make it realistic (example 9 onyxes to make a depot).

Wholly agreed with both the idea to make stuff out of rough gems and with the requirement to use three inputs (as long as each contributes full value, of course).

Doesn't it take a bunch of gems just to make a window?   Something like 3 or 9 already?

Those are cut gems, not rough ones. The mass of rough gems is comparable to the mass of ordinary rock, which is why I figured they could be used as-is without a multiplier on how many you need. It would also be neat to be able to use cut gems as building materials; in that cases, yes, a multiplier would be in order.

Perhaps instead of rough gems, let us use large cut gems as a building material. It would finally give them a use other than as a trade good.
