oh yeah!
I forgot about that technique:
relax body totally and force empty the mind,
worrying or planning does not dump your brain into sleep mode.
Do not think about the time or how many hours till your alarm goes off, that is a sure thing to keep you awake.
Having whitenoise to distract your hearing helps. Boring (low volume) TV or aquarium pumps are the poorman's whitenoise generator.


Breathing shallowly also helps as an oxygen deprived brain is less excitable.
Might be contraindicated for people with health problems such as asthma, aphneu, seizures, etc. !


Alcohol! It can help you relax, and stave off the boredom of insomnia but ruins your sleep, you will wake up unrested. Like a dwarf drink to get through the waking day, not the night.

This always puts me into a lucid hypnagogic state, which always stops me from falling the rest of the way asleep.

I find chocolate helps me fall asleep.
Also, certain noises are good for falling asleep.
To me:
Classical Music
Engine Noise
Trees in the Wind
Ocean Waves
Trains (because not all train sounds are covered by engine noise)
