Less cowardly goblins
« on: July 18, 2009, 03:54:20 pm »

I'm not experienced at modding here, so where do I change the goblins so they don't run after casualties?  I'm not sure if I'm up to taking on orcs yet  8)

Go to the Raw folder in your dwarf fortress file, open the creature_standard file and find the [CREATURE:GOBLIN] entry. Add the tag [NOFEAR] anywhere in the goblin's entry and you're done.

Not true, the orcs themselves also have the [NOFEAR] tag. They still run away after losing most of their numbers in sieges.

I'm guessing it's some kind of hard coded mechanism to prevent total civilization death in world gen.

EDIT: the wiki says that [NOFEAR] makes them never flee in battle, but that's not the first time it's been wrong. Maybe it just makes them run away less, not stop running away entirely.

I can confirm that Orcs will flee after so many losses in a battle. Perhaps NOFEAR lets them fight past a much larger casualty percentage than a creature without it?

Whittled a 8 orc squad down to 2 - the leader and a wrestler, they both ran off the map quickly.

Stupid creatures and their instinct for self-survival  ::)

So what all do orcs do other than no fear and trapavoid?

I think the tag you're looking for is fleequick.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

They're larger than goblins for starters, I think they're slightly taller than humans and elves. They attack far sooner (very low fortress value threshold for sieges), you usually see them the second winter. They don't wear the massive amounts of GCS silk clothing, they're completely naked except for iron armor. They attack in larger numbers than goblins, by far. They have a [NOPAIN] tag as well, I believe. Combined with their trapavoid tag, it can be VERY hard to fight them off without complex manual traps or a very large army.

In short, they make gobbos look like elvish infantry.

Spike traps still work as do drowning/magma chambers. So they're tough but not impossible (a nice balance). The thing that makes them the hardest is they can show up as soon as your 2nd Spring (if not sooner). Trying to fend off 10-20 orcs with 15 naked dwarves isn't going to go well.

Mod your dwarves fist attack to 80:90 and you'll have no problem with the orcs.
