Hrm, odd, it should work.  What does the level above that look like?

completely unknown. i know, whenever you dig a stair, it reveals the tile above/below it.

should i remove the stairs and actually (b)->(C)->(u)? i thought digging out a upward stair is the same thing.

Up stairs do NOT reveal the tile above them.  Try redesignating the stairs on the level above.  Make sure they're actually right above the up stairs, too.

i did. removed designation, redesigned. nothing.

Are you ABSOLUTELY sure that the down stair or up/down stair designations are above the up stairs?

Also, make sure the miners can actually GET to the room with the stairs.  And they're not busy with anything else, are they?
