40d Elf Navigational Failure

So, I had some Elves arrive to trade. It being my first year, I didn't have a trade depot up. I ignored them.

They sat on the edge of the map for a year before going insane. Now monkeys are taking all their stuff and they're still just sitting there, right where they came in.

Do you think perhaps an evil mime has trapped them in an invisible box?

What is wrong I have no idea, but I had the same thing happen to me a few times already with the Dwarves.
The merchants go insane, as well as the pack animals and both get annihilated by the guards after which the guards leave the area.
