Why do dwarves like locking themselves in?
« on: July 28, 2009, 11:34:30 pm »

I seem to have a reoccurring problem with this. Whenever I try and seal off an area, either with floodgates as in the picture or more commonly walls, dwarves like to build the obstructing object while they're on the side that is supposed to be sealed off. Why do they do this? After all, the side they like to stand on is further away from the materials, labor, etc. they need.

They will always build stuff from certain sides.
Left has the highest priority, then top.
It's really annoying and will hopefully be changed to the closest side soon.

Doesn't completely explain it... for that example it does, but once I had a dwarf seal himself into a magma chamber. The magma chamber was on the right side, the fortress on the left. If left took priority, he would have built it from inside the fortress, not the magma chamber.

Until its properly fixed, build "walls" on the side you don't want them to stand on, and then immediately suspend the construction.

Dwarves don't like to stand on works in progress if they can at all help it.

After your gates or whatever are built, cancel the walls, and your good to go. Especially important when trying to seal off HFS without losing your last dwarf.

I think they try to move to all sides, like you would in RL, although it isn't actually necessary. Of course they end up doing the farthest last and... whoops, there's a wall there!
