Odd question: are animals polygamous in this game?

If I keep 1 male and 20 females, will he get the job done? 

I've been culling my females since I have more of them but it seems to me that in the short term that'll work but act to my detriment in the long run.  So I may be better off just culling any males except for one.

Yep. Any one male will instantly impregnate any females.
