[40d] Map edge fortifications don't let water flow

I had a magma related incident that ended in about half of my brook and subsequently my river being made of obsidian, including the source. I knew that mining out the edge tiles wasn't going to happen, but you can in fact smooth and carve fortifications out of the edges, which seems like it should let the river through but it doesn't.

Perhaps it's due to the fact that the water is considered to have stopped flowing due to the obsidian dam. If it were anywhere else, water would still be flowing in, and then getting dammed, but because it's on the edge it's stuck as dammed forever.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

You destroyed the edge of the map river tiles, where the water spawns. You turned them into obsidian, and water does not spawn from obsidian.

You can possibly turn the tile back into a river tile by using a tool like Tile Edit.
