Can't channel water?
« on: July 05, 2009, 10:35:15 am »

http://mkv25.net/dfma/map-6311-hawkboats-spiralfort

Essentially, I'm trying to channel a brook underneath my fort area, so I can set up a well near my beds. But, for some reason, I can't get the water to flow out this one section I dug out.

Aside from that, there's a magma pipe somewhere and I can't work our how to find it.

And with my resources (obsidian, sand and clay, etc, as you can see), what stupid stuff can I do to make my fort awesome? I obviously have no defenses atm, can I make something really stupid but fun with my current tools?

Crap. The map doesn't shot the blue flashing triangles a the end of the bottom rectangle, the one with the floodgate in.

This is probably a stupid question, but have you tried 'k' ing over the room with the floodgate? Rocks block the view of water, and your floors are thick with them.

Is there a round patch of obsidian anywhere on the surface? That's a dead giveaway. If not, there's a trick to finding underground features. Go down to an undug layer and see what the depot access is like. There will be one 48x48 block (or two, if you have a magma pool as well, though that's pretty unlikely) that doesn't flash inaccessible. The pipe is there. Dig from the surface down through the middle of the block until you find it.

If you find that to be a bit of an exploit, exploratory shafts every 50 tiles (starting 25 tiles away from the map edges -- they're never right on an edge and they're quite large) will work fine. Since your map is completely flat, the pipe's probably near the surface.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

Also, from what I can see of the map...  it doesn't really look like you've taken water pressure into consideration.  If you put the well access next to the up/down stair I see on the lowest level on the map, then the single floodgate system means that there is a high chance of flooding your fortress when you open the floodgate to let water into the well.  If you're planning on digging it in the center of the diamond above...  then consider your fortress flooded, period.  Keep in mind that wells do not block liquids from flowing up out of them.

Maybe you're planning something else, but since the posted map doesn't go any lower, I can't tell.

I don't see the lowest set of ramps that should be on level 11, altho' I see them indicated in the level above (on level 12 as "down-ramp" symbols).  Are they there and just hidden by boulders?

Some players have reported bugs with pathing and multiple ramp systems, even when the layout has been independently inspected and confirmed as flawless.  Your ramp-ramp-ramp-ramp descent ~might~ suffering the same fate.

i don't think this should have any effect, but just for good measure, have you considered channelling off the top of the brook? in case you are not aware, brooks come with a sort of floor on top of them that needs to be removed if you want anything to fall into the brook. i'm sure you don't want anything to fall in, nor should removing the top affect the flow of water, but worth trying all the same....

(That shouldn't have any effect on draining.

Brooks work almost like they have a grate on them - not even "ankle deep".  Anything can walk over them and not even get their feet wet - literally.  You can build on them, you can even muddy the top and grow crops on them.  If you channel that top out then it's identical to a river.)

(glad you confirmed that for me. i knew about the 'brook-like-grate' syndrome, just thought i'd flag it up on the massive off chance it had an effect)

You can muddy... the river? I'm doing this just for the sake of doing this.

No.

A "brook" is not a "river".  The difference is that surface - a river doesn't have it, and is as deep as you'd expect, with drownin' and ever'thang.  A brook has that "pseudo-grate" effect on it.

They're listed differently in the embark map too, w/ diff icons. (lt blue vs dark blue or something.)
