A mod that can actively be part of the game. For example, make it run a script when a lever is pulled, or allow mechanical stuff to be based on something other then a single lever or pressure plate (such as Boolean logic). Also, make it so you could add tags to the raws that the mod responds to. For example, make it so a creature drops an item on death without making it so he doesn't drop bones.

You can already do that. Check the wiki here and here. Yes, it's complicated, difficult, and prone to breakage. But that's dwarfy, and much more rewarding when you set up a working alternator or something than if there was just an "alternator" component that you built with mechanisms.
