question about deserts
« on: July 05, 2009, 02:26:12 pm »

Why is it that every desert i have ever seen has an aquifer under the first layer. I always thought that deserts were dry desolate wastelands. Is my knowledge just wrong or is df genning improbable maps

Well I do know that Israel has 3 large aquifers. http://www.mideastweb.org/westbankwater.htm and it's a pretty dry country.

The main reason is because water travels easily through sand (dig a hole at the beach a ways away from the waves and you will hit water sooner or later).

200-600 meters deep...

So, that means, totally unaffected by the fact it's under a desert, for all intents and purposes. In DF, that would be at least, what, 70 Z-levels deep (assuming a Z-level is 3 meters, which is, like, an absolute maximum for dwarves)? So having water ten feet down in a desert still betrays logic.

Well, it depends on the geography of the area.

By far enough from the waves, I meant as close as you can without worrying about your hole getting filled up by the waves for long enough time. If you are on the beach of an artificial bay (I think mission bay in San Diego is artificial, or at least partially) where the waves are small, you could do it a few feet from the water.

It's clearly due to ancient plumbing systems that disintegrated and leaked.  So, if it was an ancient dwarven civ, don't be surprised to find magmafers.

I've been considering modding in a 'magmafer' stone type.

Y'know, explode as soon as you mine it out.

Bypass THAT with pumps! HA!
