Unfortunately this does hurt early on, when you only have 7-14 dwarves. By the time you're at the 80 mark, you can spare the dwarves for overkill. Early on, efficiency matters.

Hopefully this will change soon. There are several "low priority" jobs that really should be higher. Trading comes to mind, or perhaps actually fighting instead of eating in the middle of a siege.

If you have plump helmet biscuits[10], it can go into a barrel (though many people actually do NOT want them there).  If you have plump helmet biscuits[11], then it will never be put into a barrel until some dwarf eats it once so it becomes plump helmet biscuits[10].

True, the only benefit garnered from putting prepared meals in barrels is that they won't rot outside. Inside, prepared meals never rot so it doesn't matter and you want the largest stacks possible for space efficiency.

Of course if you're an evil cheater you can quantum dump all of your meals on one tile and then unforbid them without designating a food stockpile that accepts prepared meals.
