Bins stuck in depot
« on: October 05, 2006, 06:12:00 am »

So i brought these four non-masterpice Finished Goods bins to depot to trade with. Ok. The caravan left - bins stayed in depot. No task is getting assigned to them. I can bring them to depot again with next caravan, since the distance to depot is 0, but thats it, they wont go anywhere else. I have plenty of space in the stockpile. I even dismantled the depot - no change.

In my experience, this is because those bins go way to the back of the hauling queue, and if you keep making new items or otherwise filling up that queue, the dwarves never get to moving the bins around.  If you set a bunch of dwarves to item hauling and lay off producing new items for fifteen minutes or so, you should be golden.

... just checking... do you have any room in the corresponding pile? is furniture hauling in options turned off?

best thing is to actually leave 1 or more item in them to keep them as finished goods bin (or whatever type).. that way, they won't get hauled to a furniture pile which might be miles away from the finished goods (or whatever) pile.. and your dwarves won't have to lug one or more of the items they want to store all the way over to the furniture pile before lugging the whole (possibly filled) bin back.

I've had a number of similar issues with items getting stuck in bins, and the bins (or the items) not going anywhere as a result.

The worst case of this I have right now is that a bin in a temporary finished goods stockpile got an artifact stuck in it with a bunch of other things. Even after I disabled artifact quality in that stockpile, no dwarf would come and take it to my artifact storeroom (which does not allow bins so that everything can be seen on display).

Eventually I went in and tried dumping everything out of the bin except for the artifact, which I'm not allowed to dump. Now I've got an empty bin with an artifact in it, and that's it, and still no dwarf will recognize it and come take it out of the bin and to the artifact stockpile.

If you don't un-designate a bin for trading before they leave it seems to get stuck until next time.

Try deconstructing the depot. If the bin still won't be moved, order the entire thing to be dumped. You can just have its contents dumped on the ground next to the bin, but then you can reclaim all the items and your dwarves will scurry to put them all in stockpiles.
