Yes, I'd have to agree, that certainly is annoying, isn't it? (Is there a question here?)

If they have a cabinet and/or a coffer they might drop it in there instead, otherwise just use the option to Hide it.

Soldiers need time off without sparring to get their crap in order. Set them to off duty, remove the barracks, give them cabinets and coffers, and hope they sort their crap out. No guarantees.

I wish dwarfs with the cleaning labor could pick up other dwarfs' stuff and put it in the owner's cabinet.  They could even transfer a little economic value from the slob to the cleaner when it happens.

On the topic, will dwarfs discard their XXPig Tail SockXX and get one that doesn't have holes in it if I have new clothes around?  If so, what happens to the beat-up one?  My guys all look like hobos, but I'm afraid to whip up a stock of fresh garments, because I don't want the place peppered with dirty laundry.

The beat-up laundry remains owned by them. They'll never throw it out, like the middle-aged guy who still has T-shirts from high school.
