The deadly Smothering!
« on: June 26, 2009, 03:07:29 pm »

Why is it, that after immense length working to get some new recruits to actually USE weapons, then train with them, and actually to become an Axelord.. Why is it, with no warning, I suddenly see;
"Alath Iloniden: Axe Lord dies of suffocation"

I mean OI! I can't wait for the next patch when injuries and medicine will be a bit more advance so important soldiers arn't always giving themselves crippling injuries.

You didn't give recruits weapons did you?

Handing a dwarf an object with any potential to do harm and telling to them train with it is going to end in tears unless they are trained in and wearing some armor.

With [SLOW_LEARNER], dwarves probably don't sit around and talk anymore. They just stand in the same corner altogether, staring at each other, sticking their bearded lips out trying to make sounds. And giggling when someone actually says a whole word.

>>>ALWAYS<<< train your recruits in wrestling first.

It'll make them live longer.
THEN, you can train them with weapons.

I personally give them steel/iron chain armor and a steel shield, get them to train wrestling till they're elite wrestlers, THEN you can trust them with weapons

(then I give them addy platemail if I can afford it)

This doesn't always work. I had unarmed recruit suffocate my first champion wrestler during sparring. I think sparring really should be limited to non lethal damage.

Yeah, if you're going to have champions and recruits, I'd suggest you put one on patrol while the other spars and vice versa. Don't have champions training with recruits, that's just asking for trouble.

I've heard anecdotes that dwarves suffocate during sparring when they get knocked into furniture (IE beds specifically).  Try not having any beds in your barracks, and instead designate them from a weapons rack.  Yeah, it'll suck for sleeping, but it's worth a shot, even if it is just a bunch of anecdotes.

Units will die of suffocation if organs related to breathing (lungs, throat) get badly damaged. Has nothing to do with beds or other furniture. It's possible for the unit to live some time before they suffocate, which would explain the "died in their sleep" thing, though not the "not hurt at all" thing.

He's probably not noticing that little arrow off to the lower right (can we have that flash or appear with a text label? It's way too easy to miss if you don't know its importance).

Hippoman, a dwarf's organs-- and other small or internal parts-- don't appear on their wound list until they're damaged. Because dwarfs have a full page of parts initially and always visible, any wounded other parts mean the full list won't fit on one screen. Organs appear at the bottom of the standard list, so the only warning you get about broken throats, mangled lungs, and bruised nervous systems is that tiny arrow.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

Ok if you have anyone who is not at the same level of wresteling your going to eventually end up with one guy strangling the other to death because if the recruit get the champions neck he's not going to let go unless the champion breaks his arm so either way someone gets badly hurt.  That's why I always train guys in pairs so they normally are evenly matched thus lots of "grabs urcirsts neck" "breaks Mcdwarves grip one his neck"
