I just tried it. The channel isn't necessary.

GAHHHHHHH

Just a question as to why anyone would think the channel was needed?

My plan is to have it set up as such. Dwarves dump it down channel. It falls onto a spot that has a Stone Stockpile on it. This is directly behind a Mason's workshop. I'll only dump decent rock.

Microline and shit like that is taking a long dump off my short magma Pier.

Manual Stone Selection - Best. Mod. Ever.

Makes all stone economic so you can enable or disable any given type of stone for general use.

Enjoy.

Probably got it mixed up with dumping stuff into pits/magam/etc.

Also for real efficiency, it's quite possible to zone that garbage dump dead center in the mason's workshop. Now he doesn't even have to take a step to pick up a stone. Just make sure that you build the workshop first. It'll take them a *long* time to move a thousand or so stone out from where you want the workshop if you start dumping stone first.

Would this not make the workshop hideously cluttered?

No.  Clutter comes from items in the building, while dumping would put them on the tile.
