Getting rid of stones
« on: June 25, 2009, 03:30:59 am »

The large amount of stones is apparently causing a very bad slowdown for me, so I want to remove them and give the system a break.

So I tried building a Dwarven Atom Smasher, I built a bridge, retracted it, put a dump zone underneath it, and waiting. For some reason though the dwarves didn't put them in there, and instead dumped the stuff 2 squares away, out of the bridge range.

What did I do wrong?

Otherwise, I have a large pool of magma, and I was considering dumping the stones into the magma (temperature is set to off, but I can flick it on temporarily to destroy them if needs be) - does magma destroy stones in the same way the DAS does? WIll my processer stop working on them?

ADDED: Oooh, just remembered I have a chasm. In the 2d version, throwing stuff down would make the denizens of the chasm come out and beat you up for tossing stuff at them - does this still happen? I can dump them in the chasm instead

I could be wrong, but I believe the dwarven atom smasher needs to be a raising bridge rather than a retracting bridge. things can still be crushed inside a retracting bridge, but only on the anchor tile i think. or at least, i've seen dwarves crushed that way.

How do you form a raising bridge? you put it over a channel?

When placing the bridge, you choose "asdw" (or possibly "umhk") to designate which direction the bridge lifts up.  I think there's also a toggle ("r" maybe?) for retracting.  Anyway, retract-vs.-drawbridge is in the options when you're placing it.

When building it, press w,a,s,d or x to make it raise in one of those directions.

W = Raise towards the north
S = Retract
X = Raise towards the south
D = Raise towards East
A = Raise towards west.

Therefore, a bridge raising towards the north would protect the south side from enemies.

---bbb--- That's a bridge that's laid down, it is set to raise to the north.
;;;bbb;;;  - = Wall b = Bridge ; = Floor
;;;bbb;;;
;;;bbb;;;
;;;bbb;;;

---bbb---  Now that it's raised, it protects that south side :)

Retract simply dissapears, but raise creates a wall on the side it raises to. Raising bridges also throw things.

And to answer a question from your first post, you can indeed dump stone into chasms without fear of retribution by the local inhabitants. The batmen and cave swallowmen might fly up if they smell your dwarves, though, so if you have any flying creatures in your chasm you might want to station a few marksdwarves at the access point.

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

Also, magma will melt any stone dumped into it except bauxite or raw adamantine.
