Protip: when traders are at the depot, you can use the search function to find all of the Narrow Iron items that haven't been gathered up yet, and designate them for melting/dumping/forbidding from within the Move Items to Trade Depot screen.  I long for the day that this feature will be available in the (Z) Stocks menu!

This works awesomely.  I had the remains of probably 50 goblins scattered around the map from a seige and 2 ambushes (all from different directions).  The dwarves found gathering these far less interesting than moving trade goods to bins inside the fortress.  Some merchants came along, so I designated them all to the depot.  "Carry item to depot" has waaaay higher priority that other haul jobs, it was cleaned up in record time.

Outside items marked for dump are considered refuse. In order for them to be touched you have to set "collect refuse outside" with the (o)(r) menu.

If you can't use Jurph's proTip, then at least in the stocks screen everything is organized first by type and then by material, plus the chain mail and plate mail are next to each other, the caps start just after the helms, and so on. I use it to see, 'ah, I'm in the trouser section, leggings must be further down...'

However, unlike stone and chairs, it won't tell you how many are in use and how many are free, though I believe you can find this out from the Depot.

It started raining, then all my dwarves outside started bleeding to death. On inspection their upper bodies were missing.

Or, to find out what's in use, just count the pieces of armor, and make full suits, then just make it enough for your guys. Then tediously check em all afterwards... :x
