Lagging insanely hard...
« on: June 20, 2009, 04:14:42 pm »

So, I used to get a constant, nice, 70 fps (was capped at 70) and I loved it. Fort was going amazingly well, 67 Dwarves, 790k, AWESOME MILITARY and a nice megaproject underway (roughly 25% done, huge, elaborate arena, lots of wall placing, painstakingly long process).

So, I was fine, loving it, waiting for my next sacraficewave of orcs. Then, to my surprise, an immigrant wave, and oh! a Dungeon Master! Finally, I heard he was awesome so i'm excited.

Well, I save, and turn off my laptop. It's bed time. When I resume in the morning, it seems alright. But as soon as I unpause, it drops to a 25-40 fps, and it takes 4 times the speed to do something. So a stone haul process that takes 30 seconds takes about 2 minutes because everything is moving slowly :c I don't know why this happened. It can't be because of the increase in Dwarves, seeing as I was fine last night when they arrived, yet laggy now...

So, I upload my file save, please can you guys see whats up? If it lags with you it must be corrupt or something :c

Here it is: http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?24ynzkjmwjm Just pop it in your save folder.

I've got Orcs enabled and Mike Maydays Tileset. You only need to add Orcs, you can play in ASCII without it messing up.

It's possible there's an ambush somewhere. Ambushes can severely drop FPS from what I hear. Find them and the FPS should become normal again.

And neither can I...

Damn. Please god, I hope this is right. Did you load the save file? Would help, cause then you could say if there was a lag drop. How do I turn ambushes off? They're a pain in the ass and cowardly.

You can turn off Invaders in init.txt (and weather/temperature if you want more FPS)

Otherwise to remove the race from being ambushers you'll need to change the race data itself.

I want invaders though...I guess when it lags i'll have to search for em. Map is big, but thankfully not too big.

A suggestion I'll make to you is to place 'randomly' a few cage traps in the wilderness. It helps you catch a collection of random animals, and it might even help you notice an ambush.

Ohh, that's good. Good idea. When do ambushes appear? Is it any time throughout the year? I hate sending my guys out into the wilderness if there are ambushes any time of the year :x

If you chain up a dog out in the middle of nowhere they'll usually go straight for it.

Well i've got my military going all around the place. Do they stay in ambush or will they make their way to my soldiers? Do they tend to stay hidden until a vulnerable opponent shows up or? They're pissing me off. I can't keep sending all my guys around all the time...

Mind putting up an image of your fort layout? That might help. Also, just let the civies wander around outside-they might trigger the ambush in the process of performing their tasks.

http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?0tnmfugzild There is my compressed Map.

Stupid DF Map Archive image captchas are insane. I mean, it will say a string of words, I put it in exactly, and it doesn't work...

Hope you like my map by the way. If someone could upload it to DF map archives for me, it'd be great. That, or use DF Map compressor to view it.

Damn it. Scanned the whole map with my Military, no ambush in sight. I even had my pack of 10 dogs fanning out and scanning huge expanses of land, no Kobold or Goblin in sight...Can someone please test the map?

Out of curiosity...how is your pathing set up? Personally, I find that having one central stair case and everything a floor below each other (Beds above diningroom, dinning room above stockpile (all three of these are typically linked to each other, btw, via vertical stair columns at strategic intervals) reduces the pathfinding load by quite a bit. What size are your hallways? two tiles? three tiles? same for room entrances?
