I was pretty sure that the lag wasn't from them pathing regularly but rather trying to path to the surface. They run into a fortification that they can't actually path through so they think things have moved around and then fire the path code off again. It's like having 30 of so dwarves trying to walk back and forth through the same traffic jam square over and over.

The regular lag shouldn't be any worse that the lag you get from having some river creatures.
