"Okay... that could have gone better."

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

-From the journal of Scabrist Girethrigoth
17 Granite
Spent the past few weeks in the wilds. Lost everything at Eralmorul, even my clothes. Fortunately, I was picked up by a group of travellers going south, from whom I recieved this journal. They also offered me clothes but, somehow, it felt wrong. I've decided to go on in only my dwarven dignity.

I've continued travelling with this band. They say they've left the mountainhomes in search of a new land. Their reasons vary, but most of them seem to be involved in some sort of cult that worships a god of lust, and are trying to escape persecution. Frankly I think the lot of 'em are a few hairs short of a full beard, but they've taken me in, so I suppose I should be greatful.

Continuing south. Despite the fact that we're in spring now the climate is becoming much colder. It's come to the point that I had to inquire if the offer of clothes was still available. My hosts have graciously given me a fine silk cloak and mittens. But more than that, one stolid dwarf even offered to give up a pair of his prized pig tail socks on my account, the very same pair he had once braved a storm of goblin arrows to recover. I was truly touched.

For some reason I'm still not comfortable wearing much, and since these are sufficient to ward off the cold I've declined any further vestments.

Spent the time becoming more aquainted with my companions. It seems none of them have ever been outside the mountainhomes before this. They have no idea of the dangers that are out here! I tried explaining with some stories from my adventuring days of goblins and dragons, in the hope that they might be convinced of returning to the mountainhomes (and taking me with them) but instead they put me in charge of finding them a *new* home. So now... I'm in charge. Of this lot. A hundred leagues from civilization in any direction. Gods help us.

It's now been two months since Eralmorul. Where am I and how did I get here? Still mostly naked.

2 Felisite
Been travelling in a ravine these past few days... One of the children spotted some remains by the brook. They look dwarven, and the skull seems to have been chewed on by... something large.

9 Felisite
We're in a blizzard now. Just a few hours before it hit, the hunter said he spotted some stonework on the mountain  south of the ravine. I'm going to have us make for it in the morning.

A train of nine dwarves labored up the mountainside through the blinding snow. At length, they came to a spot where the slope eased and flattened, and the dark sillouttes of trees could be seen. An arm of the mountain disappeared into the east, and beyond was a bridge over a shallow gulley. Recognizing the rough dwarven stonework, the lead dwarf, wrapped in a cloak and little else, called to his companions that shelter was only a little further. As they passed over it, they saw that there had once been a battle here. Corpses of dwarves and some greater creature, stripped of their flesh by predators, littered the vale floor. And before them out of the snow rose a fortress, silent and dark in the howling winds.
One of their number, a hunter, broke from the group to investigate. If he had held any hopes of seeking shelter or aid from that place, they vanished as soon as he saw the horrors that were inside. The hunter stumbled down the sall hill and ran to the group.
"Orcs!" he hissed, "Orcs did this! We shouldn't have come. We should-"
They suddenly took notice of a large archway dug into the mountain. A lone dwarf stood there, watching them. The company crossed several more bridges before arriving at the base of a low terrace cut from the living rock, and the dwarf came a little ways out from the shelter of the arch to meet them.
"What is this place?" The lead dwarf asked.
"This place..." She seemed to find her voice. "This place is Angirod, and the blood of Armok's people and their enemies flows from its gates."

=======================================================================

Right then. So this is really my first time trying a community fort and I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing. With that said, this was originally going to be just another fort until 3 years into it, I play witness to one of the bloodiest and most poetic massacres I've ever seen on a computer screen.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It even had a heroic last stand at the end, where around 10 surviving soldiers and armed peasants charged two full squads of orcs and held them long enough that 3 miners, an armorer and her baby could seal themselves into a magma duct. One of the miners, also one of my original seven and wife of the expedition leader, snapped and crippled the armorer and one of the other miners, then totally lost it and jumped in the magma. And the now-errant baby happily followed her in. All that happened 5 months ago. This is the fortress currently:

So now there's two cripples and one miner to care for them.

The active miner, Fikod Icysacks

The not so active miner, Mistem Snakewinds

And the armorer, Atis Finfountains

"Some migrants have decided to brave this terrifying place, knowing it may their tomb."

A hunter (Deathlord)

An animal dissector

A cook (Cookie)

A metalsmith

And two peasants (Ark and Ousire)

Pick your dwarf, your name, your profession and whatever else. We have 6 months before the orcs return.

Aye, and there'll be plenty of use for both those jobs!

good. i always prefer the lurk-behind-fucktarded-amounts-of-traps method. less dwarf casualties that way!

I'll grab up that cook.  Call him "Cookie" (easy to remember) and try to make him fit his description (a sour, antisocial old codger who hates the world, and all the rules that go with it).  Keep him as a cook/farmer; you're sure to need one.

name her 'Deathlord'... and since this fort was so far in she can get full steel right?

Actually, the traps will just be there to keep out the pesky goblin pansies. Orcs are immune. They also have no fear, feel no pain, and attack in swarms.

Don't have any steel at the moment, as I was mostly relying on marksdwarves stationed on the walls. We do however have flux and plenty of iron and and trees for charcoal, so I'll make that a priority once we have a basic defense set up.

I'll probably start sometime this morning, so expect an update maybe around noonish. And feel free to claim a dwarf if you haven't already.

12 Felisite - 122
This is now our second day at Angirod. Despite her macabre greeting, Fikod is actually quite cheerful most of the time. And she's covered in blood. I try to avoid her when possible. I've instructed everyone not to touch anything until Solon can get a good accounting of what we have. Cookie seems to have begun lairing in the lower levels. I say this becuse the last time I went down there for a drink, the old codger came at me with a mushroom screaming something about a "Froth-bearded, lust worshippin' spore grub!"

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

13 Felesite - 122
Deathlord reported today that she'd seen signs of goblins in the area. This makes me nervous, especially since we have no real defensive perimeter at the moment. I'm having everyone who isn't doing something useful to begin piling some rocks over the terrace to form a wall. Ousire seems to have overheard the news about goblins and has wandered off somewhere... I suspect he's planning something.

25 Felisite - 122
Continuing work on the wall. We're now installing a portcullis so we can seal off access to the main hall.

4 Hematite -122
The children, whom I've assigned to take care of the two injured, have been screaming about buckets. I've had Ark make a few more just to quiet the little brats down.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

15 Hematite - 122
Humans! So we're not alone here. I can only hope the goblins don't choose this moment to attack.
