Getting an old game to run on Vista...
« on: June 29, 2009, 09:02:06 pm »

I've recently been attempting to run the classic 1990's game Balance of Power, but no matter what I do, Vista just screams at me that I can't run it with an error message saying I need to get a version of the game that is Vista compatible.

Is there anything I can do?  :-\

Is it a dos game? If so try using dosbox.

If not, then I'm not sure sorry.

Run it in compatability mode? Wait, I don't remember if Vista kept that feature from XP...

Interestingly, Armok's name actually originates from arm_ok, a variable in one of Toady's earlier games that kept track of how many of your arms weren't missing.

I tried running it in Dosbox, but it's a Windows 1.0 game. Damn it.

I tried running it in Compatibility Mode for Windows XP and then Windows 2000, but it just spat the same error message at me.  :-\

Try compatibility mode for 98, run in 256 colors, etc.

Eh, this maybe getting into the realms of undoable but trying installing and running Windows under dosbox then trying to load the game.

Windows 3, and 3.11 both had to be installed on top of a dos base, so I would assume that Windows 1 would be the same.

As for compatibility mode I don't think you going to have any luck.

You could install win 3.1 or something in dosbox, or a virtual machine like from VMWare

What confuses me the most is that the game would work on XP, but it no longer works on Vista? Why?

Because Vista is broken.

Because the game interacts with the system in a way that is no longer used with Vista?

Compatibility mode is crap-o. What you want/need is the official microsoft "compatibility tool". There are, however, two problems

1) I dont know whether or not this tool is available for Vista, but I'm pretty sure it is. (I'm not gonna bother searching)
2) You will need to know WHY the game isnt running and what you need to do to get it running. And this is not an easy thing to find out.

But the compatibility tool can definetly fix all your problems with ye olde software.

you might consider re-downloading that game. I have vista and it works fine for me.

"Windows XP and ME were so bloated!  They've got all this bad design stuff that goes back to the late 80s!  Why won't they just drop all the support for stuff nobody uses already!"

"Windows Vista doesn't support my Windows 1.0 game!  It's broken!  How dare they break compatibility with 20-year-old legacy software!"
