Simple question relating to water/magma
« on: June 09, 2009, 03:46:13 pm »

Before I risk flooding the entire world I want to make sure of something.

I've dug a channel leading to the very edge of the map, but there appears to be one square at the very edge which is untouchable.

Is it safe to ignore that square and presume water will still flow off the map through the tunnel?

And does magma also flow off?

Presume away, and you'll soon learn by your mistakes.  ;D

(i.e., "no", to both.)

So why can't I channel that square?

My map seems to have 1 square thick edges that cannot be dug, channelled or built upon...

I think that if you smooth the end stone, then carve it into a fortification water will flow through it. But I don't know about magma.

The edges of the map are protected because there would be nothing on the other side of it, which would cause some logistical problems from a programming point of view. ( At least, that's my best guess)

Curses, it's loam!

I thought it was possible to channel water off maps though?

No comment about the channeling off the edge of the map, but what you could do is dig a one or two square channel down until you hit the rock layer, than carve fortifications into that.

You may want to make that outlet two or three squares wide, that way it will drain better if you are channeling from a high volume source like a stream or river.

Do the "dig down, then out" trick.

Outlet >> source. Good formula to follow.
