mechanism jammed in doorway
« on: June 07, 2009, 09:30:28 am »

So how do I get it out?  The problem is, it's underwater.

I got too many goblins stuck in my cage traps, and in trying to free up cages, I packed too many into my drowning chamber, right up against the door holding back the water.  I accidentally opened the waterway before releasing the cages, so when the cages released, a mechanism got into the same square as the doorway, jamming it open.  I've shut off the drainage so it's not causing much trouble, I was just hoping to get the cages and clothing down there.

Let this be a lesson, boys and girls, always have the inflow come from the ceiling, and remember to pop the cages before opening the floodgates.

How? You know the answer - you drain the area, send one of your dorfs in and retrieve the sucker.

You were wise to have multiple flood control, grats on that.

Best way would be massive pumps, beat the flow.

Actually, not so wise.  I only had one door in.  I should've made a double-lock for the input.

Anyone know how many pumps it takes to beat out a one-row channel of water from a brook?  2? 3?

Incidentally, moved to a magma dumping pit, which makes things waaaayy easier.

A one-row channel?  Just one, if it's also only one z-level deep.

2-3 pumps should cover it, never done it myself but it's not a big challenge.  Hard part is where to dump the run-off.

Or, if you can drop just 1 dollop of magma into it, you'll form a block of obsidian and can channel it back out later, done deal.  mftw baby.
