One row of serrated glass disk weapon traps and one row of cage traps.

The disk traps are f'ing brutal.  I imagine the sharp-edged glass swiping at the invaders, severing not only arteries, but limbs and heads as well.  When they make it through that--by stepping on the bodies of their allies, or their body parts, like gory stepping stones--they get trapped in cages.

The trapped invaders get thrown from ten stories up.  Survivors are granted their freedom.  Any goblins (or dragons) that make it through the traps are given free reign to slaughter until the soldiers can get on the scene.

Seriously, how could it get more fun than that?  I put everything on hold just to watch the arc of a goblin's toe or head as it flies gently through the air.  Picture, if you will, dwarfs going about their business, carting booze and stone from one place to another; when suddenly, a torso lands in their midst, lobbed over the fortress wall after a goblin smacked the ground at 100 mph.  My current record is an eight story bounce.  I'm hoping that when my murder pit is ready and I have 31 z-levels to work with, I can at least double that record.

Sometimes I just send my 6 (now 5) champion swordsdwarfs straight to the oncoming hordes at the edge of the map.  They are unstoppable, and even completely shrug off arrows and bolts.  The only death happened when one lone swordsdwarf tried to catch an arrow in his hand, broke a few fingers, then paused long enough to marvel at the novelty of "injury" to be pounced on by the goblins.

Challenge is for the weak.  My Fun comes from disembowelment, dismemberment, and general disregard for the sanctity of life.  What else can you expect when my dwarfs regularly mix in ground zombie meat into their meals?

I've been playing with the orc mod. It makes things truly difficult sometimes, especially with the old deathquest adaptions on local leaders. Also, pissing off the humans can make things difficult, because horse-archers are like unto death.

Siege engines is one of the things I always retain. They don't block passage and they do consume resources, and even masterwork quality with legendary operators are inaccurate as all get-out. They'll thin a siege, but sure as hell won't stop one.

The trick for using siege engines effectively is to get the siegers to stand still in it's line of fire  ;)

On topic: I don't use weapon-, stonefall or cagetraps, nor pressure plates. All my defenses are dwarf (/lever) operated. Which makes sense as I play the dig deeper mod. Orcs are trapimmune anyway  :)

i seem to recall at some point or another one of the popes deemed it a mortal sin to use crossbows upon other christians. i wonder what stance armok takes on crossbows being used upon dwarves.

I'd think Armok would approve of anything that keeps the blood flowing. That would exclude atom smashers though...

I love how almost everybody would be imprisoned if they talked like this in real life.

Thanks for all of the ideas, people. I like the glass serrated disc idea the most, myself. Blood for the blood god!

No exploits, no atom-smashing. I tend to just dig a moat or a trench and wall myself in, free from all harm. I have yet to see a siege yet (literally, I've never even had one), but I think I'm pretty self-sufficient, and try to have an indoor water supply, preferably from the moat. If I ever find a place to grow tower-caps, I'll have no need to suffer foul Helios' torment at all. It... can be a little boring. But the wealth... (I believe my love of shiny things means I'm part magpie).

even when you have a completely self sufficent fort its important to have an airlock system setup so you can send some wrestlers or something outside so you can dispose of the would be seigers that way caravans and migrans and useless shitheads nobles can come in.

Well yes. I don't just cloister myself away from the outside world entirely. I do have guard towers, and a bridge between. I've also got small, one-dwarf pillboxes in the courtyard, just in case something goes awry, but pretty much the guard towers do the best job. Of course one my newest fort's moat freezes in winter, necessitating some other way of doing things, but so far things work out pretty well.
