so every now and again i'll get some items on the ground like socks and such, outside...just left there either from dead dwarves or dead goblins.

i also cant get them to dump them, i have a zone set and such.

Stuff dropped by dead creatures is automatically forbidden (to stop civilians from running into the melee). You'll have to claim it before it can be collected.

Smew's suggestion turns on "collect refuse from outside", which is for collecting corpses, not clothing.

It also refers to things you've set to be dumped, if you have them marked for dumping, but they are outside, dwarves won't grab them unless that option is set to on.

X's mean the item is worn, rugged, torn up, etc, 2 XX's (XXitemXX) means it's worn even MORE, there's also a  list of what all the item descriptors mean in the help menu in-game.

Hm. Sounds like you're looking at items that are owned by dwarves. When you look at the item, it should say who, if anyone, owns it. Owned items cannot be moved except by the dwarf that owns them, and even then the dwarf generally has better things to do with his time (like stand around in meeting areas). My best advice in this situation is to just hide the items and forget they exist.
