Issues with my dorfs and GCS silk.
« on: July 08, 2009, 01:55:19 am »

So I decided to give the "dwarf heaven" world seed a whirl and thus far everything is so far so good. That is until my dwarves decided to go on this endless collection frenzy of the GCS silk from the nearby chasm. No matter what I do and what labor options I turn off or how many times I forbid each and every new piece of silk, these assholes won't stop running to their near deaths and also inadvertently killing every damn dog I have.

Any suggestions or is there something I'm missing?

Go into (o)rders and (W)orkshops and tell them not to auto collect silk.
Hope that helps

Jesus, thank you so much for that.

EDIT: Spoke to soon on that, it seems that regardless the two main culprits (my grower and carpenter) are still running out and trying to get the silk. I don't really understand because I don't even have a loom up, and I disabled spider silk in my small cloth stockpile.

That's weird.. Silk shouldn't go directly to a stockpile after being excreted by a spider.
That's what the loom is for, spinning thread from webs.
Cloth stockpiles store thread and cloth, not webs.

The dwarves gather it up and make it into thread, then take it to the loom and make the thread into cloth

You might have still had the job pending at the loom, I don't know what else to tell you.

There is no loom in existence atm and even after turning off auto-collect for workshop orders two dwarves kept running out at random, even a few in my first wave of migrants ran off to do it.

Is it possible that there is maybe something else near the chasms that is causing them to head over in that general area?

Well what is their job when they're going over there?

Well no one is a weaver of any sorts at the moment and I'm suspecting it may be Item Hauling because previously when I turned it off my Planter and Carpenter were still running off like idiots and it only stopped when I was able to get everyone inside and raise the bridge for my moat so they had nowhere to go.

Well check their job the next time they run out

If it's item hauling/picking up equipment there's something out there, so forbid it or whatever.

I think I found it. A kobold was killed over by the chasm and my boyos were tryin to chuck his corpse in the refuse pile. When I forbid it I got a job item misplaced announcement from the guy who was heading over and was closest.

Yup.
In the same orders menu, you can forbid your dorfs from picking up anything that came from something dead. You can, of course, manually go and un-forbid death items when it's safe to pick them up.
