Out of the blue I got a message that one of my suffocated. Upon locating him it seems he died in the barracks in bed. Last time I checked he wasn't there or injured (to my knowledge) or anything. I'm not really upset about it since he was just a newly recruited guard but I'm curious as to the method of his demise. My best idea is he got injured (perhaps in a sparring accident), was rescued, and then promptly suffocated in short order with me being unaware of the happenings. He was a guard so this theory seems likely. I just want to make sure so this doesn't happen to one of my legendary dwarves later on.
Short question: Dwarf suffocated in barracks, random accident or malignant problem?

Almost certainly a random accident- he could have dodged onto the bed during an accident, and been wounded in the same move, thus leaving him on the bed and dead.

or been injured sparring and went to bed himself, where he suffocated.

Or a lucky punch to the neck rendered him unable to breath.

Check your champions' kills for your dead guard.

In my experience suffocation happens due to throat or lung injuries, most likely a sparring accident.

your dwarf probably has bowel problems, he farted himself to death

before you allow anyone back in the barracks you need to send in a cat in a cage, failing that a bucket of magma to ignite any lingering gas pockets

Have you checked your other military dwarves for regretting murder?  Could be her was sparing in bed, and got asphyxiated... erm, strangled by the dwarf on top.
