I have tons of high value prepared food in my fortress, which i wish to sell to traders. the problem is, its all in stacks of 15-25, and so is too big to fit into barrels, is there a way i can split the stacks or ...?

Nope. 

It's better this way - you don't want to sell the barrels, and since barrels only hold 10 max, your stockpiles are denser.

what he said. and if your problem is bringing it to the depot, just type "___ ___ Roast" or whatever the name of the particular meal is, rather than searching for 'prepared food barrel'
