Well, sort of. I just don't know of anybody trying to grow aboveground trees on mud yet, so that might still work, was all.

Tested. Doesn't work under any conditions I can figure out. Doesn't matter if the obsidian is there or not there, muddied or not - only grass will ever grow.

You can however stick a farm plot on soil revealed from created obsidian.

I'm going to have to test if you make a layer of soil then cover it with obsidian and turn it into soil.  Will trees grow then?

I'll post my results when I find out.

Another idea - no multilevel though - could you just cave-in the surface for like 5 z-levels and build a glass-roof/floor on the surface to get a greenhouse with trees ? would be really awesome for a zoo (and you can harvest wood from time to time)

Indeed you can do this.  Did it in a past fort.  No need to irrigate or anything, even completely indoor grass, herbs and trees grow.

Great! I will have a green house in my next fortress then :-)

Do I need walls on the surface to protect the roof ? I mean can the usual sieges destroy the glass-floor or are my people save down there ?

Think i ll try to create a great natural looking cave with an "out-door" part (green house) and an indoor tower caps part, united by river running from one cave to the next ... maybe some rock pillars ... *happy*

Any constructions are completely impossible to destroy, apart from the occasional cave-in.

Nothing can destroy constructions, unless you want them deconstructed.

This is floors, stairs, ramps, or walls.

ANd it doesn't even need to be glass.
Although have you seen a glass floor recently? They tend to be really thick.
