Wealth of The Homeland [I Have Some Questions]
« on: May 29, 2009, 03:19:28 am »

I am familiar with the fundamentals of DF modding, but I don't know if this mod idea is possible.

Basically my idea is, every Biome has a special mineral, plant, tree, and animal that is worth ALOT but not extremely common.

My questions are...

1. Can you have Biome specific minerals?
2. How do you make plants trees and animals less common?
3. Can you make Biome specific layers?
4. Will traders from other biomes have the possibility of appearing with THEIR special items?
5. Completely unrelated, can you make it so certain civs only attack after finding adamantine?

I think thats it for now, thanks all!

1. Minerals are decided based on volcanism- sedimentary, metamorphic, igneous.
2. Those you can limit to certain biomes but I can't help much with rarity.
-how does the semimegabeast tag work?
3. If that biome is an ocean then yes...
4. As far as I understand yes.
5. We don't have that kind of control yet. Attacking behavior is determined with a few tags and a defined fortress worth.

*I feel certain about roughly half of this post.

1. no. You can make some minerals unique to certain types of rocks and/or volcanism. By tying some minerals in to sand or dirt layers you could theoretically make them less common in mountain areas.
2. Plants and animals can be made less common/valueable with their relevant tags (look in the dfwiki under the modding section). There are no tags to make trees less common or even more/less valuable. You could potentially make a tree less common by creating many duplicate entries of all the other trees in the biome, but that would cause issues on embark and trade screens.
3. Ocean only.
4. Yes, assuming they have the tags which give them access to the animal/plant. Note that some things have hard-coded values (trees are always worth 3, seeds are always worth 1). They won't bring live versions of the animal unless they have use_any_pet_race.
5. no. You can make whatever you want spawn from the HFS though.

Finally: no race will bring things from custom smelter reactions.

So does that mean that they won't bring custom metals?

The presence of the smelter reaction does not influence metals: it's the matgloss. They will bring metals that technically cannot even be created due to a lack of smelter reaction or access to the right ores. [METAL_PREF] civs will always be outfitted with the highest % non-deep metal (so make sure you slap [DEEP] on metals you don't want civs to start out with).

So I could put DEEP on steel, just so other civs can't get it?

if you put [DEEP] on steel, *no* civs will get it, not even yours. You will only be able to get steel from manufacturing it on-site.
