Hunting parties
« on: May 28, 2009, 12:38:39 pm »

Title says it all. If you could assign hunters to squads like you can with the military, we could avoid the problem of a single hunter being stomped to death by the mammoth he decided to shoot.

Or, the ability to tell dwarves WHAT to hunt might be nice.

Plus it would give better odds during one of those goddamned ambushes.

Hunters will hunt whatever the current wildlife "squad" is. There's only ever one at a time. To my knowledge, they won't hunt site feature creatures, like troglodytes, cave crocodiles, fire imps, carp, etc.

Of course, it can be a pain to keep track of what the current wildlife squad is and whether or not it's safe to hunt.

Oh, I was expecting this thread to be about hunting as a recreational activity for nobles, which would still be a good use for your idea.  Also, hunting parties imply hunting accidents.  And hunting "accidents."

How to shoot friends and interrogate people?

And we could make nobles more annoying and increase their death rate at the same time by making them occasionally demand hunting parties to go out and kill a specific creature on the fortress map. They'll want to bring a noble friend or two, and one escort per noble, and they won't be happy until they kill their designated target.

And if you nobles want to go kill a dragon or something? Well, you could always make them forget about such ideas with a relaxing full-body magma bath.

In the DF tradition, they'd probably instead demand that a half-dozen dwarves be recruited to their hunting party...meaning you'd be more likely to lose good workers than nobles, since they'd probably send those guys out to do the actual dirty work.
