Human fort?
« on: May 29, 2009, 10:00:19 am »

I read on another thread that somebody was playing as humans in DF mode.

How exactly do you do that?

By editing the RAWs and adding the CIV PLAYABLE tag or something. It's on the wiki, or just do a search here, some guy was talking about it yesterday.

Yeah, you add [CIV_CONTROLLABLE] to the humans entry in entity_default.txt.

But, to completely emulate the experience of dwarves, you should remove [CIV_CONTROLLABLE] from the dwarves, add the [PROGRESS_TRIGGER] and [MERCHANT_NOBILITY] tags to the dwarves, and remove [MERCHANT_NOBILITY] from humans.

This will allow the dwarves to come to your fort, they will send a guild representative, and remove the redundant guild representative from the humans.

Cheers :)

Does it matter where in the file I place the tags?
And is there any real difference in gameplay when playing as other races?

You can place them anywhere, but you might put them in similar places as the other entity entries, just to keep things neat.

And there aren't really any major differences. Humans can do everything dwarves can do, except extract adamantine, and they can wield the large weapons like mauls and great axes. Goblins only eat bone and meat, and can't farm, so food is a little hard to come by. Elves are basically unplayable.

But playing as another race is a good opportunity to play differently. Like building a giant above ground city with humans. Or building giant obsidian monolith to live in as goblins. Or get slaughtered by the dozens with elves.

Note you do not have to remove the [CIV_CONTROLLABLE] tag from the dwarves to play as humans. When embarking, you can press tab to check the different embark settings. One setting is checking the government you will embark under. Here you can choose your race. Dwarven mountainhomes symbols will be on the map for dwarves and human town symbol will be on the map for humans. If a civilization has multiple different sites under their control thanks to world-gen, generally whatever towns the civ can make will be the most dominant.

You can mess around with the entity file to do a lot, like making goblins like sissies or Humans able to do everything.Don't take away [WOOD_PREF] or [trEE_CITY] from elves,or some of your civs can be wiped out

Note you do not have to remove the [CIV_CONTROLLABLE] tag from the dwarves to play as humans.

I mention removing the tag because the dwarf outpost liaison will come to your human fort if you don't for some reason. He'll just greet your fort and then leave, but it's a little jarring, so I mention removing it.
