Lava as a Lightsource
« on: May 29, 2009, 03:06:30 am »

I haven't really played in adventure mode, but I want to start soon.
I hear that your fortresses are pitch black when you return to them, but what if there's magma? Does it emit light? Can I use canals of it as a lightsource?

No. Magma doesn't affect your line of sight, I found this out when I was running away from some of the stuff in a corridor.

(Pulled a lever. You know what happens next. No I didn't die. MY FEET HAD GOTTEN BURNED BECAUSE I DECIDED TO WATCH IT THOUGH.)

Or when the stuff sneaks up on you from around a bend.

True story with an adventurer trap fortress.

I would bet money Andrew has edited things retroactively, except I can't prove anything because it was edited retroactively.

Darn. That's rather disappointing.

Well that is how it works in real life.

Lava isn't actually all that bright at best.

I suppose it wouldn't be in most circumstances. But if it were fresh (which is how I imagine DF magma always is) I'd imagine it would be enough to dimly illuminate a narrow cavern, provided your eyes were fully dilated.

Your fortresses are not pitch black, it's not lighting, it's Line of Sight issue. Dynamical lighting is not in the game yet.

Yes you should.  It's a totally different experience.

The only way to add light to your lower levels (or your fortress altogether) is to channel holes from the surface.
BUT DO THIS KNOWING THAT THE TILES YOU CHANNEL TO MAKE LIGHT WITH WILL COUNT AS OUTSIDE
