... Yes, the hugs are for everyone.  No stabbing, though.  Just hugs.

The first example was completed by Barry Kearns who reported it November 18th, 2006. It was done with a dwarven bard (for the cave bear companion) who was born under the Raven birthsign with pick pockets and food preservation. The experience level of the PC was deliberately kept at a minimum so the cave bear was able to kill enemies until the PC accumulated enough ingredients to start a wish engine via the "gremlin bomb" technique. It has since been completed without a pet using similar strategy.

Yeah, Barry Kearns - that was the hurthling monk guy. So the crazy bastard finally did it.

Only by kiting like a bitch. Technically, pet kills don't usually count. I know for a fact it doesn't count for killing Kranach. I'm not sure if pet kills count in the player kill-list(important for getting a particularly awesome ring).

Bards and Necromancers have a hard time finishing the game, due to the fact they rely on companions(slaves for the Necro). In the Tower of Extreme Fun, they'd get incinerated, and on the second-to-last level of the main dungeon, they can't move with you.

What't the gremlin bomb technique? Luring a gremlin onto a water trap to generate infinite numbers of them(which you can their pick pockets)? I didn't know gremlins spawned in the Small Cave. Also, the level below the first one are NOT part of the Small Cave, that's the Uninteresting Dungeon, which ironically spawns more interesting dungeon features than anywhere else, and leads to High Mountain Village.

The Small Cave, of course, generates seriously over-leveled mobs (I believe it's 2x player level. At level 1, they're at level 2 - manageable. At level 49, they're at 98 - ridiculous.) I'd assume that, if the player level is roughly half the level of Gremlins, that Gremlins would happily spawn for you.  ;)

(Alternately, it's possible he just got one or more wishes and obtained a 'fluff ball' or something...?)

Perhaps. Then again, I did encounter gremlins in the Infinite Dungeon earlier today(prior to being mobbed to death by a hobgoblin patrol in the wilderness).

Do you guys ever go through the small cave early in the game, or do you just never bother?  Also, do you bother with the puppy cave at all?  How about the Pyramid?  There's so many options...

95% of the time, always, and unless I miss it.

My usual start is SMC to find the stairs and the useful item, then either druid or elder quest depending on skillset.   From there, I'll do the puppy cave, then through the SMC to the dungeon below all the way to the town.  From there it's off to the main dungeon, usually clearing out the tops of the two interesting caves on the way.  Once I hit the main dungeon, I go to the town and do the dwarf quests.  Then it's time to gear up for the Tower, where something kills me.

HMR stands for Hazardous Materials Requisition, not Horrible Massive Ruination, though I can understand how one could get confused.
God help us if we have to agree on pizza toppings at some point. There will be no survivors.

I've learned to avoid the small cave with certain characters, namely weak ones that don't start out with Healing. Paladins can survive well in there, weaponsmiths not so. I haven't once had a merchant that survived all the way down there.

It's been so long since I've played ADOM... This thread inspired me to download a copy and play it again. I've had some luck by starting out in the infinite dungeon.

A drakling wizard with lucky corruptions (using scrolls right after a bad corruption) is the character I've had sitting around for more than a year now. At the moment she's in the casino, and has done...all the elemental temples. She also lead the banshee into the living forest for the entertainment value, then used invisibility and left her there. The Crown of Science is an item I wear almost all the time. The jackal swarms cannot be defeated by men or mer, and run rampant upon the countryside.

Imagine a cool peice of sky-blue and milk-white marble about 3cm by 2cm and by 0.5cm, containing a tiny 2mm malacolite crystal. Now imagine the miles of metamorphic rock it's embedded in that no pick or chisel will ever touch. Then, imagine that those miles will melt back into their mantle long before any telescope even refracts an image of their planet. The watchers will be so excited to have that image too.
