Shift key for Z levels not working

Hey guys, I'm brand new to Dwarf Fortress and I've been trying to play through the tutorials but the shift key doesn't seem to be working.  I can press ctrl+numpad 5 to go down in z-levels but I can't press shift+numpad 5 to go up, and the < > keys don't seem to work at all.  It's extremely frustrating. I am using the Mayday tileset, does this have something to do with it?

Probably. There are lots of hidden modifications that the mayday set puts in without necessarily telling its users, many of whom are new to the game. I'm not familiar with it, so I don't know the changes.

bollocks, it's all mentioned on the front page, just below the download link.

the gist of it is: Yeah, they changed the z level keys.
