Selling narrow stuff impossible?
« on: May 23, 2009, 08:09:25 pm »

I have to spam the forum again ><...
Gobbos bring me some metric tons of narrow clothing. The metal stuff is melted - of cause.
Now i've read, that everyone trades that stuff for something more useful. But my traders won't take anything of those narrow cloths :(
What am I doing wrong? Do you guys mod the traders to accept it? Do I have to modify in in my fortress (like decorate, if that's possible). Neither elves, nor humans nor dwarfs want that crap.

Again, the wiki doesn't tell me what to do :(

That seems.. odd. Could you explain exactly what happens?

You should be able to trade off narrow and small clothes to the merchants.

I would bet money Andrew has edited things retroactively, except I can't prove anything because it was edited retroactively.

Yeah, that's weird.

Which is happening:

1. you bring it to the depot and the traders give you some kind of 'error' message saying they wont take it? (tell us what it says)

or

2. you go to bring the items to the depot, and when you type 'narrow' into the search nothing comes up

if it's number 2, it's likely because all your narrow items are crammed into bins, and the 'name search' won't find stuff that's in a bin. bring your Finished Goods bins to the depot.

It sounds like you may be trying to hit "o" for offer, which is where your fortress essentially donates goods to the traders.  Traders won't accept offerings that weren't made or at least modified in your fortress.

If you want to receive something in exchange for your narrow cloth goods, you should make your selections in both columns of the trade screen, make sure the traders will be getting a fair profit, and then hit "t" for trade.  They may counter your offer; pull about 3/4 of the items they added and hit "t" again.

... offer... trade...  :o

Sometimes it IS strange, what you think "reality" wants to tell you. Also strange is, that i've never hitten "t" by accident whan trying to trade that stuff.
It works. It always has. I just didn't do it, because of the greyed out "offer" sign.

Now, all my craftdwarfship seems to be foolish, as I can always just trade that stuff.

Thanks a lot! Really :)

I feel pretty much the same once I start getting sieged with regularity. No single trade caravan has enough stuff I want that's worth all the narrow and large crap I accumulate between caravans. I normally end up just giving them massive profits to get rid of it all, since you can't offer it.

You can make the goblin clothes part of your fort's stuff by sewing cloth, silk, or leather images on to them.  Then you could offer them.

Not worth it in my opinion.

If you've got many cave spiders I don't how else you could get rid of all the cloth after a couple of years.

I generally leave the cloth stuff outside unless its blocking something important. Besides Kobold raiding parties suddenly appearing deep in the bowls of your fortress is always funny :D

Masterfully crafted clothing, made from masterfully dyed masterfully woven spider silk FTW.

TBH, I think that all dwarf fortress problem solving falls either on the "Rube Goldberg" method, or the "pharaonic" one.

I don't usually make clothing.  Let the peons run around naked, I say.

I go with masterful silk crafts.  They're worth a lot and they're so light that you can stuff quite a few into a bin.
