Dwarves are unaware of other Z-levels
« on: May 23, 2009, 10:03:55 pm »

I've found a rather serious bug with Dwarf Fortress.
Whenever I play, everything works fine for a few seasons, then all of a sudden, my dwarves won't change Z-levels to do their jobs. This causes huge problems, as all my dwarves get stranded on whatever floor they're on.
I can get a dwarf to go to a different level if I tell it to build a new staircase, but that doesn't help because only miners can move, and I end up with stairs all over the map.
Right now, I've got two dwarves stuck on the surface, an unconscious dwarf who can't be rescued because the beds are on another floor, and a bunch of dwarves with nothing to do because they're stuck on the floor with their bedrooms.
This is not an isolated incident, this has happened on almost every fortress I've made.
I'm using version 40d mac.

I cried when I realized that this was on the Mac. It sounds like it has a ton of potential for a community fort. :P

You should probably upload a save, in case this is a new bug.

Two questions:

Are you using ramps?

Do those ramps have walls next to them?

He mentioned stairs in the OP.

Yeah, please upload the save to the Dwarf Fortress File Depot and/or upload the map to the Dwarf Fortress Map Archive, so that we can take a look.

I got frustrated, flooded my fort with magma, then deleted it.
I'll start a new one, and play until I get this problem again.

are you running the pure mac version,
or a mac simulating windows with a windows version?

you could try switching, "if" your computer can handle it.

also, copy out your good savegames to preserve them before you commit suicide

Pure Mac. I don't have a Windows virtualization program on here.

I do have Linux installed on another partition, though. How well does Dwarf Fortress run under WINE?

I ran 40d11 under Wine just fine, although nowadays I use the native Linux one.

How did you flood with magma, if your dwarfs wouldn't change z-levels?

TBH, I think that all dwarf fortress problem solving falls either on the "Rube Goldberg" method, or the "pharaonic" one.
{Unicorns} produce more bones if the werewolf rips them apart before they die.

There was a magma pipe. All I did was tell one of the miners on the high levels to dig over to it.

I'm playing a new game, and I've had no problems so far. I'm really hoping it stays that way.
