Killing Pets
« on: May 29, 2009, 06:07:31 am »

Hi.
Migrants bringing many animals in to my Fort and since i got problems whit lags earlyer i want to get them killt some way.

Right now my dwarfs are realy happy whit owen rooms and many different kinds of food and drinks so i dont think killing off some pets will make them throw tandrum.

So does anyone knows a good (maby automatic) way to get them killt?

Create a small room that you can fill with water or magma or collapse or filled with spikes (basically a death room).

Put a door on the room.

Set the door to forbidden, but leave it pet-passable.

Create a meeting zone in the room.

Remove other meeting zones (dining room, statue garden etc)

If you do it right, Dwarves won't go into the room (cuz it's verbotten) but pets will, wait for all pets to enter the room then set the door to be tightly closed to prevent them from escaping and pull the lever of death.
Watch as they all die and the Dwarf with 21 pet cats immediately tantrums.

pets won't path through forbidden doors either.

But having your dwarf with pets pass through a non-pet-passable door works well enough to seperate them, then it's an easily matter to kill off the pet.

One way is to have a short dead end corridor with a non-pet-passable door and a bridge crushing trap on exit side and a level that activates on the dead end side. That way the owner will trigger the trap to kill the pet, not very automated though.

You can automate the killing by having short paths between common areas which are non-pet-passable and long paths which are deadly.

I had this problem myself earlier. Be sure that you are more careful than I was about who's allowed to pull the lever.

I haven't tested this but make a tunnel with a door in the middle and a retractable bridge in front of it.
Set the door to pet impassible.

Behind the door have a lever for the bridge.
Profile it to the dwarf with pets.
Pull + repeat.

Then have a lethal drop below it or spikes also connected to the lever, etc.

I usually just kill the dwarf if he/she isn't useful then butcher the animal when it becomes a stray, it takes awhile for the game to register the pets as stray after there owner dies. :)

If you're just worried about fps, cage them.

I know, so not dwarfy. =X!

edit: I just realized you can't cage pets. Shame on me.

I remember someone's pet solution. It looked like this, I think

Code: [Select]
++++++D++++++
++++++D++++++
 +         +
 ++^=====^++

D = not pet passable door
^ = pressure plate
= = retractable bridge

The doors are tightly closed so pet's can't pass through them, and the pressure plates are linked to the retractable bridge. Dwarves will walk through the doors, but pets will have to take the perilous way around, where they get dumped into a pit whose lethality is of your choosing.

Except I remember the guy having trouble with dwarves getting dropped from the bridge.

Hmmm, best bet would seem to make a meeting room and set it up with retractable spikes and a level outside of the room. Make this room a meeting room and the only one. After all your dwarves meet up and their pets follow tightly close all the doors so pets can't get out. Once all the dwarves are out pull lever repeatedly.
