So, I've got a goblin child snatcher in a cage. How do I kill it?

Personally, the cage he resides in is more valuable to me than anything he might have, or any clever methods of execution. I just want to get the goblin dead so I can re-load my cage trap, as I'm low on cages right now. My fortress as of now is an immensely tall tower constructed of obsidian, so I tried setting up his cage at the edge of the top and throwing him off, but my dwarves failed to chuck him off the edge. Instead he was released, scared everyone, and ran out the front door back into the cage traps that caught him in the first place. How do I effectively throw him off the edge of my tower? The last time I tried I built his cage right on the edge, and placed a pit zone right off the end of the edge, and they didn't throw him off. What am I doing wrong?

Also, about how far must a goblin fall to die? I'm looking at five z-levels at least, and was wondering if I had to make it deeper.

EDIT: Oh, and I realize that I could just station all my military/dogs around the cage and let him out after stripping him of weapons, but I'd rather not get blood all over my tower.

Build a weapon trap, then place his cage on the other side of it.  Release.  Enjoy. ???.  Profit.

You can't pit thieves/snatchers I think, they just escape.

Build a retracting bridge linked to a lever over a pit, wall it in, release him, retract the bridge.

Personally I'd just slaughter him and then clean up later. If you use a hammerdwarf and are lucky maybe he'll just golf him right off the top of the tower.

I personally prefer to "include" caged goblins in my military training.  ;D

If you kill him "outside" his blood will go away after a season or two.

Ah, so the problem is that snatchers can't be pitted. Thanks for the information. I wound up just dumping all the goblin's items and opening his cage in the middle of a pack of dogs.

Practical and effective.  (Tho' the same in between a pair of armed dwarfs would have given experience.)

No, thieves CAN be pitted, I did it last night.  Tossed two right into my titan pit.  At a risk of derailing the thread, the titan won't kill them for some reason, though she smashed the wrestlers pretty well.

Snatchers might be a different case, a couple of the goblins I tried to pit somehow ended up getting dragged all the way through the fortress and stuffed into another cage.  Still trying to figure that one out.
