Help with finding a site
« on: May 16, 2009, 12:29:45 pm »

I've tried to get a really good embark site for quite some time, and the "Dwarf Heaven" from another thread on this forum doesn't work for me. Are there any other sites like it?

I once had a site with both Ex. Ign. rock and sedimentary layers, with tons of magnetite and coal, so it was perfect for iron production. Also magma. Here is the link to the thread: http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=34602.msg525524#msg525524

I'm currently playing an embark with sedimentary, igneous intrusive, and igneous extrusive layers, including flux, plenty of (magnetite) iron deposits, heavy forest, magma pipe, HFS, and a brook. Can't recall whether it has a chasm or bottomless pit or not - haven't found either yet. Neutral tropical location.Oh, and bauxite. can't think of anything I need that it doesn't have. Comes from a heavily tweaked worldgen.

Thanks a lot, both of you! I'll try them out immediately!

EDIT: Vampire Penguin, your file gives the error: Missing stone gloss: GEMSTONE_JET. Do you know what that is?

EDIT2: Kinnis, I can't seem to find the site you talk about. Can you show me a picture on the map?

Rarely is.

The size of the embark site (X x Y) and the specific features you choose in the site finder help, but a screenshot (or exact directions) to the location on the world & regional maps are far more sure.

(Remember that with some maps the little world & regional icons can change from gen to gen.)

Yeah, I should have thought of that. Oh, I forgot to mention that it also has (red :P) sand.

I actually didn't find the site I chose through the finder.

Red boxes show the location. I think I've got that right - it won't be more than a square away from there.

I generated the world, but the entire mountain range was haunted, and the site didn't look at all like your screenshot. Are you sure this was the correct worldgen?

Means you're running different mods to him. I generated it just fine in vanilla DF with only Orcs (i removed the other creatures that come with the Orc mod).

I'm not running any mods, all I've got installed is the Mayday tileset on 40d.

That might be it then; if he genned the world in an earlier or later version then it'll come out different.

Ah, sorry - that's another piece of info I should have specified. The map was genned on 40d11 with no significant mods. (cat fix and tilesets only.)

Edit: I've heard that the full Mayday install does make some modifications to the game as well? I'm actually using the Mayday tileset, but I extracted the graphics only - I didn't use the full installation.

Yep, that'll be it then; maps gen differently on 40d11 than on 40d

Here's one genned in 40d

It has HFS
         Magma Pipe
         Flux
         Plenty of iron
         Coal
         Red Sand
         Rock Crystal
         Heavy Forest
         All metals
         Access to all civs

Water is limited to pools which are plentiful enough that you won't run out of drinking water, but probably not enough for any serious project needing water. No Bauxite, although you can trade for it. Dwarven civ The Corridor of Squashing also has coal and cut diamonds to trade. Wildlife is mostly mountain goats and marmots, with an occasional Giant Eagle and Sasquatch, and there is a replenishing group of snailmen and slugmen.
