Change the dwarf's nickname, and see if the artifact name changes as well.

The resulting party killed 20 dwarves, crippled 2 more and the remaining 9 managed to get along and have a nice party.

I have had that happen once before. It was a possession of my founding mason. A coffin made of Malachite (His favorite stone) studded with crystal glass (Another favorite) and with a picture of an earth elemental on it. I put it in the main meeting chamber, and set that entire area as his tomb.
