I have a magma vent, and I built a grand trail and all, yet for some reason I can't seem to be allowed to build a magma forge or anything. I have the magma!

Did you use reveal?  I've heard that can screw up the discovery dialog for subterranean rivers, preventing tree-cap growth, so that is probably a related issue.

Yep. Magma forges are only unlocked when you get the "your dwarves have discovered a magma pipe/pool" event. They'll also start out unlocked if there's magma visible on the surface when you embark. Using reveal prevents the event from occurring; thus, no forges.

i had a similar bug recently in which i found the magma normally, and it unlocked the magma buildings, and then everyone died and i had to reclaim...   but the reclaim party COULD NOT use the magma buildings, despite there being magma available

Also a known bug. Reclaiming breaks a number of things.

Using reveal without scumming seems like a bad idea in general. All those tiles loaded is ugly and has to contribute to lag some.

Actually, according to the wiki revealing terrain makes the game run faster.

I think it's a vastly amusing thought that elephants are so afraid of heights that when Dwarves invented the Z-axis, they couldn't bear to face dwarves in combat anymore.
