Trade rep starting location
« on: May 04, 2009, 08:05:32 am »

I have a paved, protected, trapped, and otherwise secure path from my trade depot to the edge of the map.  Through careful channeling and tree growth I have made sure that trade convoys are forced to spawn where the trade road meets the map edge, and anything spawning elsewhere on the map has great difficulty reaching the entrance.  Caravans spawn on the road and drive in safety to my trade depot.  My trade representative, on the other hand, appears on the opposite side of the map and has to get through unimproved land crawling with ambushes and wild animals.  I have even had him appear in spots on the map edge that were due to my digging unconnected from anything else and not possible to path to or from.

Suggestion:  Make the trade rep appear where the convoy does.  If the trade convoy is constrained to appear in one spot, the trade rep should appear there even if he's not so constrained.  At the very least he should not appear in a spot that can't path to my fortress.

I second this idea. And from what I know (have heard) of trade rep/caravan entry points, this should not be too hard to code in.

Basically, have the caravan decide where to show up first (instead of the trade rep) and then have the trade rep accompany them, as opposed to my current understanding of the system, which is the trade rep shows up, and if the caravan can accompany him, they do. Otherwise, they show up elsewhere.

This idea is something good to put in.

Let's expand on that, a few more ideas.
1. Prioritize spawning on map edges with road.
2. If diplomat/liason, by some gameplay reason, need to spawn at any edge, include with the diplomat/liason a small contingency of guards (maybe 2 marksdwarf and 2 hammerdwarf).  This would make sense since if diplomat and liason travel separately from any convoy, they should not be travelling by themselves.

One of the toads decided to go for a swim in the moat - presumably because he could path through the moat to my dwarves. He is not charging in, just loitering in the moat.

The toad is having a nice relaxing swim.
The goblin mounted on his back, however, is drowning.

Seconded.

About the diplomat/liason, maybe we could have a small group (2-4) that always accompanies him, and then there's a different group that accompanies the caravan (as it is now)? When they come together, it looks like there's only one (bigger) group, but they're actually two different groups: the caravan group leaves with it, the diplomat group leaves with him. This would be better because the diplomat also leaves without an escort most times, since he does not leave with the caravan.

I agree with this suggestion. One thing to consider though is that armies and caravans moving over the world map again is most likely to influence what direction these things appear from on your maps.
