Actually, writers, like musicians, get royalties for each book sold that they provided the material for.  Since books are more substantial than songs, they probably get more than a dollar per book, if it's a hard-back book.

Even softback books go for at least 5-10$, maybe more. And with the manufacturing cost being so low, anything thats even half fair should get the author over 2$ a book.

Little is fair in the media world. Typical royalties for both books and music albums are about 8-12% of the retail price per unit, and the agent takes a cut of that 8-12% too. So an author is lucky to get a 75 cents for a $9.99 paperback.
