Graphic sets problem
« on: April 27, 2009, 04:59:59 am »

I have a small problem with 2 graphic packs I tried, one being May Green's pack and the other being Rantingrodent's overhaul. Basically, the title bar letters look 'smudged' like on an old typewriter or printer. See the image below for example. Anyone have an idea how I can fix it? It doesn't show up in the vanilla version of the game.

I didn't edit the init file in any way in either pack. I fear it's something with my (horribly sluggish) laptop, but I don't know what or how to fix it.

Thx in advance

It's likely just the tile set you are using. It is fairly common practice to use blacked-out areas in the text tiles to create shapes which do not obscure the text in all of the main text areas, but will show up when the letter is used in the game, over some other background colour. Crack open the font file and have a look.

Okaay... uhm, what file is that? Curses_Square? I don't see anything problematic there...?

Also, I haven't seen anyone else with this complaint, so if there's an error with the font, shouldn't there be more complaints?

Curses square was probably what you were using before but with those packs you should have some other files in that folder now.

In the init folder you can look for any of the entries about fonts. With graphics turned on you need to look at the graphics font option instead of regular windowed/fullscreen.

I couldn't see anything in the graphics files, so I copied my installation of DF on a USB and tested it on a uni computer. Sure enough, it loaded and there's not a single smugde or graph glitch (it also ran a lot faster than on my laptop). So it's not caused by the graphics set, but something on my laptop.... Anyone have ideas?

Hm, maybe it's the resolution you're playing in? Looks like there's not enough place to fit the icons.

Here is my resolution:

Quote
[WINDOWED:PROMPT]

This is the size and font for windowed mode.  Changing to 800x600 and the 800x600 font might make you happier.

[WINDOWEDX:1280]
[WINDOWEDY:800]
[FONT:maydayMIN.bmp]

Full screen info.

[FULLSCREENX:1280]
[FULLSCREENY:800]
[FULLFONT:maydayMIN.bmp]

Doesn't matter whether full screen or windowed...

Ah, here's the culprit. You changed the vertical resolution down to 800 and probably didn't reduce the amount of tiles to display to 80:50.

Eh, I hate to be such a nuisance, but no: the grid is set to 80:50. I'll post the entire init file (minus the comments, the adventure mode settings and the rgb codes) so you can see what'll be the problem:
