For something more modern, give Demon's Soul a try...  Pitty the halloween event is over. (Made the game harder mode...)

I Wanna Be The Guy.

Seriously. I Wanna Be The Guy. That game makes me want to track down the person who created that game, rip out his heart, shove it down his throat, and have him choke to death on it.

Super Mario Forever

Known as Super Mario Frustration on Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=in6RZzdGki8

Dowload the patch file here: http://www.zophar.net/wwwthreads/showthreaded.php?Cat=&Board=talktown&Number=295614&view=collapsed

Patcher: This will take the original Mario + the patch and create Super Mario Forever: http://www.zophar.net/utilities/patchutil/ips-patchercz.html

Strategy guide here: http://strategywiki.org/wiki/Super_Mario_Forever

Don't pull all your hair out. I've beaten it with a lot of state saves. A LOT.

I think for a game to be enjoyably difficult it has to also be predictable. I played "I wanna be the guy" and realized I was going to die over and over until I memorized the level. That is stupid. See this wall that looks exactly the same as that other wall, this one does nothing, that one kills you. Remmmmbeeeerrrr.

I'd throw my lot in for Contra with 3 lives (I can get to the snowfield with out dieing and some times even beat that), Spelunky, and Stuntman from the 360, trying to constantly "string it".

I am a weakling when it comes to sidescrollers.  I can only get past the first level of Metal Slug without dying.  Course the Metal Slug Anthology has this annoying control lag...

Let's see, Syobon Action was already given...
There's I Wanna Be The Guy and it's spinoffs: I wanna be the fangame, I wanna save the kids, and I wanna be the Shrine Maiden.
There's Kaizo Mario world and its many almost-unplayable-even-with-save-states... unless-you-know-exactly-what-to-do spinoffs.
Then there's the whole series of Touhou shooting ga- HOLY CRAP THIS GAME IS IMPOSSIBLE EVEN THE BULLETS SHOOT BULLETS.
