Usability improvements
« on: October 19, 2006, 07:01:00 pm »

Up front, I want to say: Don't get me wrong.  I love this game.  It's fantastic.

From looking at the various lists of things that are intended to be implemented, it looks like new features could be added and added and added nonstop for years.

And that's great.

But please consider taking a little time away from that to make some basic usability improvements - things that would make the frustrating parts of the game much better - instead of just adding new features and putting off usability.

For example (this is not my idea, I saw it somewhere on this forum), when you're choosing material to build a bridge, instead of the current absurd list of rocks and blocks and bars and logs that goes on forever, something like:

  + rocks (13243, 6)
  + blocks (42, 59)
  + logs (360, 76)
  + bars (132, 43)

Meaning (for example) there are 13243 rocks, the closest of which is 6 away from the intended site.

Select rocks, and it opens up to:

  - rocks (13243, 6)
    + gneiss (932, 6)
    + schist (422, 8)
    (and so forth)
  + blocks (42, 59)
  + logs (360, 76)
  + bars (132, 43)

And so forth.

Again, don't get me wrong.  This game is great, and I appreciate what you're doing very much, and will continue to think it's great and appreciate it regardless of whether you decide to make it more usable.

But please consider it.

Thanks.

That is actually a really good setup you suggest. I have nothing to add.

I third.
I would also like the ability to select "rock" itself as a bulding material (ah la "I don't care which damn rock you use.")

This is a good idea. As an addition, I think it would be nice to be able to set preferences on what material may be used on what purpose. Mainly, I hate it when I see my mechanics loading stone traps with obsidian, which I'd like to see made in to swords.

Would sure be nice to be able to set what items to decorate with bone, shell and gems as well. Kind of annoying to notice that you've got barrels decorated with diamonds in your food storage.
