Giant and dwarf creatures
« on: September 04, 2007, 01:50:00 pm »

In real life, there are a few people who are very short or very tall. When extreme, it tends to cause a short lifespan.

I suggest that there be a small chance (let's make it 1/X) that a given creature is a size bigger or smaller than the norm for that creature type is and that (s)he would have a lifespan 30% less than is normal for that species. Also, there would be a 1/(X^2) chance that a creature is two sizes bigger or smaller than is normal, and the creature would have a lifespan 51% less than is normal for that species ( (1-0.3)^2=0.7^2=0.49=(1-0.51) ), etc. No creature could be smaller than size 3, unless the norm for its species was size 1 or 2, and in that case they couldn't be smaller or bigger than normal (to prevent something like a size 4 creature of a species normally size 1).

EDIT: It should probably work like a multiplier on size, rounded, so you could have a size 19 elephant with chance 1/X instead of 1/X^4, etc.

Woooo math!

Personally, I don't see a need for this at all.

I like the idea, as long as it's pretty rare. Just imagine your amazingly large dwarf becoming your gladiatorial champion or military general. It just adds more flavor to the world. Of course, having measured height would do the same thing, i.e. "Onul Miniforge is slightly shorter than average," or even "Urist Snootynose is overweight due to his gluttony."

I like the idea, especially if the demons and the balrog aren't excluded.

I don't see why this shouldn't go in. Especially if body size and stuff go in the descriptions as well, as one poster suggested.

The math is good, but in game terms you would need to abstact it a lot.

It wouldnt work well if you said something like "this dwarf is 50% bigger than normal". It would have to be shortened to "this is a hulking dwarf" or "this is a runty minotoar"

Of course. However, that's not my job, that's Toady's. Even if I did do it, the work would probably be wasted.

Also, 50% bigger than normal?! That's like a 9-foot man!

Though that would be so incredibly unlikely, given the present knowledge, that I'd be more willing to believe that Microsoft doesn't exists.

Toady has previously said that he's interested in having genetics play a very real role in terms of breeding and such for the game, involving Mendelian punnet squares at the very least.  In fact, he's said that he was looking into various ways of making incest bad... instead of just a flat chance of things going wrong for the result of incest, he wanted to make some genetic codes that were double-recessives, and so would have a greater chance of popping out in incestuous situations.

Where am I getting?  Well, giantism and dwarfism could be another genetic factor... amongst many other genetic problems.  Mutations too.

A game that models complex genetics as a minor feature?

Whoa. *is amazed*

Scratch my idea, then.

A game intended to be run on multi-gigahertz computers.

There damn well ought to be heavy-duty number crunching, and Toady isn't wasting it on that graphics crap, so . . .

On my own project, I'm trying to figure out how to make attacking a result of moving limbs in specific ways. I may have to compromise for a while, though.

One small thing- I agree that small variations in sizes are a good detail to include, however, it will need a new name. Otherwise, you will have giant Dwarves, dwarf Giants, giant Giants, and so on. other than that, it's OK.

I suggest looking at Toribash for some inspiration on that.  That game is actually about moving the joints properly, but it sounds a lot like your project.
