What is the cutoff for Elite <Military>?
« on: April 26, 2009, 02:57:18 pm »

I'm trying to train my hunter to not get mauled by wild animals, so I'm getting him some skill in wrestling and hammerwielding.  But I don't want him to get locked into the military, so where should I pull him out of the military?

Once a dwarf reaches the "Great" level in a military skill is when they become an elite, and thus cannot be dismissed from the military. :)

Yep.

    14: Professional
    15: Accomplished
    16: Great (= Hero)

Generically they're called "Heroes" (as Elite/Master/Lord differ between weapon form).  "Champions" at Legendary.

Once they hit Professional, I'd keep an eye on them, and pull them the second they hit Accomplished (or estimate "just before"?) - a long wrestling match with a stubborn creature or four could generate some 100's of experience in the field, pushing them over the limit, and altho' Great is 1500 experience above Accomplished, it will happen, you just know it.

So this is frustrating.  I've got him wielding a hammer, yet he hasn't gone up at all in hammerdwarfery, yet he's quickly gaining wrestling skill.

Any ideas?  Yes, he has a hammer in his left hand, and nothing else in either hand (except two pairs of gloves on for some reason...)

Um... try this series of commands:

First, forbid his hammer.  Then, from the <m>ilitary menu, switch him to unarmed combat.  Then deActivate him.  Then close that menu, then reactivate him. to practice unarmed.

If that doesn't work, and he picks up a diff hammer, you could try it again but forbid them all, but that wouldn't make me comfortable with what's going on.

Well, I'm trying to skill him up with Hammers, but he hasn't gone up at all and continues to gain skill as a wrestler.  He's wielding the hammer and all, but no luck.

Reduce his armor preferences to clothed and weapon preferences to unarmed, let him drop everything, and then reset the preferences. He should be able to start sparring properly when he drops all the armor in his hand he's probably carrying.

Does your dwarf have an opponent with weapon?

If armed and unarmed dwarf sparr, I think both gain wresling.

You need two armed dwarfs to sparr in order to get weapon skill.

in 40d11 they often gain wrestling faster than the weapon they are using. In 40d they don't get a whole lot of wrestling without being unarmed, either by setting or because there's a problem using any weapon they may be carrying.
